Concrete dyes and stains are one of the best ways to add color to any existing concrete surface; it greatly improves the overall look. Coloring concrete also increases the property value of areas such as, driveways, pool decks, parking areas, large commercial courtyards and interior retail spaces.
Concrete can be stained with any blend of colors in order to achieve a decorative sealed concrete finish that will last for years to come. Pool decking areas are a perfect location for decorative stained concrete; not only will the old concrete be restored to a colorful surface, but it will also make your outdoor living space complete. Stained concrete compliments any exterior landscaping and blends naturally with the surrounding areas of your home or business.
There are two main types of concrete dyes; solvent, and water-based dyes.
- Solvent-based dyes are available in several different colors, they are not limited to just earth tones like acid stains. Solvent dyes are more vibrant and bright.
- Water-based dyes are pastels and are softer in tone. Dyes penetrate concrete with a translucent appearance. They will not cover the concrete surface like common paint or overlays.
Concrete dyes can be used to create a custom logo on the concrete surface making your home or business stand out from the rest.
Acid staining is considered to be the old school method of adding color to concrete. Acid stains are a blend of water, acid, and other metallic salts that react with the lime in the concrete. Colors are very translucent earth tones of green, brown, and blue. Some acid stains have strong reddish tints like cherry or mahogany. Application of concrete acid stains produces a unique result for every floor.
The finished results of acid stains are mottled and inconsistent. Acid stains tend to be more random in color variations and work well for the client or designer looking for a stained concrete floor. When acid stains are placed on the concrete driveway, pool deck, or retail space, the acid will settle in low spots creating a darkness leading to a faux blend of color.
