Surface preparation is by far, the most important step in any concrete project, whether it be resurfacing or installing new concrete. The purpose of surface preparation is to create a concrete surface profile aka c.s.p. which is a standard in the industry. A product should never be applied to a surface that is not properly cleaned, thoroughly etched, or suitably grinded. Surface preparation for a resurfacing project begins with removal of any current floor covering.
Cleaning the concrete surface can be done in multiple fashions depending on the floor covering that will go down. When using heavy duty industrial epoxies or commercial floor coatings, manufacturers require a certain texture for their products. Etching concrete is done by using muriatic acid or citrus based alternatives that essentially react with the calcium and lime of the concrete in order to open up the pores of the concrete and remove dirt, grime, etc. This process involves first wetting the concrete, letting it sit for an appropriate amount of time, agitating or roughly scrubbing the surface, and then neutralizing the surface to a proper pH level which reveals a light sand paper finish.
Another method of preparation is grinding which is the use of mechanical tools and diamond blades to remove coatings or profile existing concrete. Concrete grinding and surface preparation is excellent for general cleaning, paint and coating removal or leveling an uneven surface. Some examples are workshops, metal buildings, garage floors, automotive shops, and offices, industrial and commercial applications.
